Update in November, 2021 following some kind of failure of likely the CPU, but possibly the motherboard, in early 2021. I remember I had been listening to music through the computer, and the sound went berzerk and then ended in a loud, rough, “digital” sound that continued unchanging until I quickly turned off the speakers. The screen also went completely haywire. The computer no longer boots, and the “CPU” EZ Debug LED is lit on the motherboard.
I had been interested in updating to a motherboard with built-in wifi anyway, so purchased a new motherboard and new CPU at the same time. My intent is to install all the existing components into the new motherboard (including current CPU) and see if that solves the problem. If it does not, I’ll open and use the new CPU.

GPU
Per Tim Dettmers:
- “Currently, my main recommendation is to get an RTX 2070 GPU and use 16-bit training.”
- “If you are short on money I would recommend any cheap GTX 10XX card from eBay (depending on how much memory you need) or an RTX 2060.”
- “If you just want to get started with deep learning a GTX 1060 (6GB) is a great option.”
- RTX 2060 is the most cost-efficient way to have robust deep learning support (includes Tensor cores, see Tim’s analysis quoted below)
- “From this data, we see that the RTX 2060 is more cost-efficient than the RTX 2070, RTX 2080 or the RTX 2080 Ti. Why is this so? The ability to do 16-bit computation with Tensor Cores is much more valuable than just having a bigger ship with more Tensor Cores cores. With the RTX 2060, you get these features for the lowest price.”
The Gigabyte GeForce RTX 2060 is capable of greater than 60 FPS on most AAA games at highest graphics settings.
